Dogs' sense of smell can help humans too!

Search and Rescue dogs can help sniff out missing people in natural disasters and help law enforcement find missing or lost individuals. They also help military and police sniff out explosives/drugs, and can assist people with disabilities or medical problems. They can even help doctors detect viruses to prevent and treat illnesses!

Sniffing is how dogs say “Hello!” They “see” with their nose, not their eyes. Dogs depend more on their sense of smell than humans depend on eyesight. Dogs use their nose to sniff out if other dogs are happy, aggressive, healthy or sick.

The part of a dog’s brain dedicated to processing smells is 40% larger than a human's.

Dog's can pick out their owner's scent from over 40ft away, but if conditions such as wind and humidity are present, they can smell their owner as far as 12 miles away.

Dogs have 100 million-300 million smell receptors. Humans only have 5-6 million.
